In the background of the piece, female figures are shown displaying a menacing pose. The contrasting black and white of the work, and the use of the chiaroscuro technique, makes the scene more intense and powerful by limiting the visibility of the image.

Ismael, Saincilus, 1940-
- Abstract / Description
-
Ismael frequently blends themes of Vodou and Christianity and puts his own perspectives in his work. Although he also painted many “market scenes” his most popular works, such as this, are his “madonnas”. This particular madonna and child are surrounded by exploding florals and contained in a golden banner. The halos of the religious figures, as well as the entire piece, is extensively patterned.
