The objectives of the workshop were to present the results of key studies on sediment quality conditions in Tampa Bay; to develop ecosystem objectives that articulate the long-term goals for managing bedded sediments in Tampa Bay; to identify and evaluate candidate ecosystem quality indicators, and associated metrics, that could be used to measure attainment of the ecosystem objectives (including physical, chemical, and biological indicators); to establish numerical targets for priority indicators and metrics; to review and propose refinements to existing monitoring programs based on the ecosystem quality indicators that were identified; to propose sediment management strategies that would support the ecosystem goals and objectives that have been identified for Tampa Bay; and to quantify relationships between source loadings and sediment quality.
