Summary: Voices of the Glades: Remembering Hurricane Irma (2018) offers a local perspective on the impact of a major hurricane on rural communities bordering the United States Everglades National Park. Hurricane Irma arrived in Southwest Florida on September 10, 2017, bringing high winds and a devastating 9-foot storm surge which deposited large amounts of debris and caused extensive damage to the region, including homes and businesses. The unique and delicate ecosystem of the Everglades is intricately linked with the identity and economy of the close-knit communities of Everglades City, Chokoloskee, and Copeland. Recovery has been slow, and many of the needs of the residents have yet to be met. The documentary utilizes excerpts from oral histories collected by Florida Gulf Coast University undergraduate students as a means of giving voice to the local culture and needs of these communities and how their unique history and knowledge of hurricanes informs their experience. Residents, many from multi-generational families in the area, offer an insider perspective of their experiences before, during, and after Hurricane Irma, providing insight into the ways that local knowledge informs cultural responses to hurricanes.

Note(s): This film is the product of a Florida Gulf Coast University undergraduate summer research project, funded by a grant from our Communities in Transition Initiative to engage students in community-based research. Before departing for an 8-day stay in Everglades City, FL to conduct field research, students spent 5 weeks on campus researching the history of Florida culture, hurricanes and related topics. They collected oral histories in three local communities, completing video oral history interviews and shooting footage. This was followed by 2 months on campus to learn how to use the Final Cut Pro X program and complete the film. Students were mentored by an anthropologist and an archivist.
