X-ray of Lateral View of the Left Side of Joseph Merrick's Skull with Superimposition

Download File

Date Issued:
1988
Abstract/Description:
Joseph Merrick (1862-1890), also known as “The Elephant Man,” a stage name created during his circus and "freak" show career, was plagued by an unknown affliction that caused his bones and soft tissue to grow excessively and irregularly. Intrigued by this affliction, Dr. William Maples sought and received permission to personally examine the bones, held at the Royal London College of Medicine Museum. Using superimposition, a technique consisting of layering images on top of one another, Dr. Maples was able to distinguish between bone-related deformities and soft tissue deformities. Ultimately Maples and fellow physicians concluded that the most likely cause of Joseph Merrick’s deformities was Proteus Syndrome.
