Summary:
The Australian leaf-mining fly, Hydreillia balciunasi, was first released as a biological control agent for the management of the submersed aquatic plant, Hydrilla verticillata, in August 1989. Since then, the release program has resulted in the introduction of nearly 300,000 H. balciunasi in two states and 11 locations. Despite repeated attempts, it is established permanently at just one, and possibly two, Texas locations, where populations have remained low. This suggests that H. balciunasi will have minimal utility as a biological control agent for hydrilla.
